K bar is one of the oldest and most popular bars on the University of Kent Campus, Canterbury.
A key element within the design brief for the refurbishment was ensuring that K bar did not lose its character and popularity. To achieve this successfully, the design sought to enrich the space through tactile and tangible materials such as fabrics recycled timber and industrial elements. A warm and inviting colour palette was established to help retain the qualities and atmosphere within the space – Red, black and brown were the swatches chosen from the original and made to ensure that the new bar retained the weathered, student feel. With red brick lining the feature walls, a weathered copper bar top, dark railway sleepers and iron fittings, all encasing this need to ‘return home’, whilst future-proofing K Bar for students to enjoy for years to come.
